HEAD RUSH
yesterday, I was hit rather hard on top of the old noggin. I had just lit a fire in the church's huge charcoal grill. I was trying to adjust the cooking surface, but I couldn't move it unless I had both front and back lids open. The grill isn't designed to have both lids open at the same time, so when I put them up, they were feebly balancing on one another. When I slid the cooking surface into place, I heard some weird scratching noise (the sound of one lid sliding off the other) and then BAM! The lid hit me right on top of my forehead, hit the bridge of my nose, and knocked my glasses off my face.
I now have some outstanding smash marks on my face. Just in time for this week's wedding too. Oh, did I mention that I'm in the wedding party? That means I'll be in like 50 pictures. I have a huge gash on the top of my head plus my nose is black and blue. I'll be ticked if I don't at least get a cool scar.
Anyways, this got me to thinking...it stinks that I was hit on the head really hard, but it won't be the last time that it happens. And the other day, I slipped when I was walking up some stairs and came within inches of bashing my shin. Man, that would have hurt. Unfortunately, it won't be the last time I slip when walking up the stairs.
Think about that for a moment. Do you remember the last time you smashed your hand, or slipped and fell on ice, or stubbed your toe, or broke a bone, or twisted your ankle. I bet you do. The bad part is realizing that it won't be the last time you'll suffer one of those kinds of injuries. For a guy, one of the worst feelings in the world is getting blasted in the "you know what." You would never look forward to getting hit like that, but you must know that sometime in your future it's going to happen again. Who knows when, who knows where, but it will happen.
I guess we really are just accident prone. You almost cannot escape random acts of injury. So next time you walk barefoot around the house, or leave your cabinets open, or slam your car door, or walk quickly up a flight of stairs, or hang out with little kids who like to hit, beware...one of these circumstances will inevitably and coincidentally cause you a good deal of discomfort.
I'm still waiting for the first time that I'll wipe out on my bike. I hope I live.
