There are a number of people out there who know what this vegetable is but simply cannot call it by name correctly. I hear grown adults mis-pronouncing the word 'onion' all the time and I wonder how they made it this far in life without learning how to say it correctly. The shocker is that most don't even realize that they say it wrong. I would like to say that it is a regional issue similar to how people say 'warsh' rather than 'wash.' But I cannot see enough evidence for this. So, I will remind everyone how exactly the word onion will be pronounced from here out. I am not going to list any specific names...but you know who you are.
The word 'onion' should be pronounced like 'un-yun' or 'un-yen.' For the official pronunciation click here.
The incorrect way that I often here is 'ung-yun' or 'ung-yen.' Seriously folks, there is no 'g' in the word onion. I cannot think of any reason or excuse why a grown adult would pronounce onion with an additional 'g' but it has to stop. So, then next time you are out with friends and somebody orders a burger with no 'ung-yens,' please stop them and correct them. Together we CAN make a difference.
