recently, I have been enjoying the game of golf. With little understanding of how you are supposed to play this game, I have found myself delighted by the fact that I can "crush" the ball. Usually I pay little attention to placement, direction, proximity to the pin, or other bits of nonsense and reserve all my excitement and anticipation for that drive that goes the distance. I am not a good golfer, nor do I care to be. It is just fun. This hasn't happened for me in a long while...participating in a competitive activity and not being the least bit competitive. I am not trying to reach this ridiculous score that would be considered on "par" with the course; what fun would that be. If I was shooting par, then my game would end a whole lot sooner. I would miss out on the opportunities to really explore a great portion of God's green earth. My current abilities allow me to go on hikes through the woods, watch the frogs dart away as I approach the ponds, build sand castles, and meet other golfers (who really aren't that friendly). Okay, well...the grass is greener on the other side, so I guess that's why I keep hitting my ball there. My goal is to get a 6 on every hole. That way I am guaranteed to get a good amount of "cart" time, and still enjoy the amenities offered by the natural scenery of the course itself. Plus 6 is a much better number that 5 or 7. And anything lower is just downright silly. Who wants to get a 3, seriously?! Some people play as if they are trying to get done as soon as possible. "Yes, sunk that one in only 3 tries! On to the next whole." Anyways, I am a little confused about one of the rules at the course I frequent on Friday mornings. Why do you have to be 21 to drive a cart. That's outrageous! What?! A 20 year old person is not responsible enough to drive a battery operated bumper car?! Are they afraid that an 18 year old student might forget that you don't drive the cart on the green. Americans are allowed to start driving at 15; 16 by themselves. And that's driving in traffic, right next to other cars, stereos blaring, road construction, 40 mph. But no....not responsible enough to drive a golf cart. It's lame, but I am sure they have a good reason. Okay they don't...they are old, mean, golf guys, who have played so long and tried so hard to "perfect" their game, that they've decided that everything else surrounding them on the course should also be perfect. Trouble is that they cannot ever perfect their game, so they take it out on the little guy. Don't talk while putting or driving or chipping, or...er...NO TALKING! Don't throw your clubs, don't do anything spontaneous or overly exciting. And whatever you do....don't drive a cart unless you are 35 year of age. Serioulsy grandpa, get over yourself and let's play some golf. The kids who are interested in a good game of golf are not the same "hooligan" kids who spray painted "fat head" on the back of your shed. Lighten up. Hand over the keys.
